Root canal treatment in Almere
An inflamed root canal cannot be missed. It is an intense and severe pain. However, there can problems brewing before you notice them. This is because sometimes your root canal is infected, but meanwhile the nerve of the root has died off. Appearances are deceptive, because this does not give you any symptoms. While in the meantime, the inflammation does work its way through the tooth to the bone. A root canal treatment is also necessary in this case.
This is what happens during a root canal treatment
In short, root canal treatment consists of the following steps:
- The dentist takes X-rays before, during and after treatment. This gives the dentist a good picture of your teeth and the course of the procedure.
- You will often be given a local anaesthetic. In some cases, the nerve in the root canal has already died due to infection. Then there is no need for anaesthesia. Of course, you can always choose whether to undergo the treatment with or without anaesthesia.
- The dentist then places a “rubber dam”. This is a patch of rubber used to cover everything but the infected tooth. This is to prevent bacteria from finding their way to your tooth just after the dentist has cleaned it.
- Then the dentist gently drills an opening in your tooth. This creates access to the root canal. The dentist removes the contents of the root canal with a rotary file. This also immediately widens the canal a little.
- Next, the root canal is rinsed with a disinfectant rinse.
- Finally, the dentist fills the root canal with filling material. This closes the root canal firmly. This reduces the chances of the next inflammation quite a bit.
How long do we take? That depends entirely on how many inflamed root canals you have. Usually, a treatment takes no longer than an hour and a half.
Pain management after a root canal treatment
Don’t worry. Of course, we won’t let you go back home in pain. On the contrary, we relieve you of that. After treatment, we will give you a strong painkiller to suppress the after pain.
Aftercare
After the procedure, we advise you not to eat or drink until the anaesthetic has worn off. This usually happens 1 to 2 hours later. Otherwise, there are no restrictions after your treatment. Even brushing your teeth and having a toothbrush are no problem.
Do you have post-operative pain? Then take a paracetamol. After-pain usually disappears a few days later, after a week at the latest.
Does swelling occur? Then hold a cold pack or some ice against your cheek for 15 to 20 minutes. In most cases, the swelling is completely gone after 5 days.
Healing
The pain and swelling disappear quickly after a root canal treatment. But this does not necessarily mean that the inflammation has already healed.
Was the inflammation already in your bone? Then it usually takes six months to several years for the inflammation to heal completely. To keep track of the healing, our dentist regularly takes an X-ray.
Sometimes, new procedures are necessary, but usually 1 root canal treatment is enough.
